Welcome to the Atlantic City Public School District
Donna L. Haye, Superintendent
Welcome to the Atlantic City Public School District website. Our elementary schools serve Atlantic City residents, while our high school serves students from Atlantic City, Ventnor, Brigantine, Margate and Longport. We are a culturally diverse school district with approximately 6700 students who speak more than 36 different languages.
This year, we are excited to open two new, state-of-the-art elementary schools in Atlantic City. The Pennsylvania Avenue School is projected to open in September, with the Richmond Avenue School following later in the school year.
Atlantic City Public Schools have tremendous resources available for all of our students. The Board of Education has demonstrated a commitment to providing the students with a high quality educational experience. We are fortunate to have highly qualified and dedicated teachers and support staff, led by a talented administrative team which is supported by a strong operations department. Parent and community support for students in the District is valued. Our Board approved a partnership with Richard Stockton College of New Jersey which benefits the students in Atlantic City's elementary and high schools by allowing them to participate in urban garden projects, tutoring, mural projects, yoga classes and mentoring programs. The Atlantic City High School has partnerships with Sodexo, Atlantic Cape Community College, Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and Stockton College for the Campus Kitchen program, which is the first high school site in the country to prepare meals and deliver them to families facing hunger.
In our elementary schools, the Literacy Collaborative School Reform Model is utilized for language arts literacy instruction which incorporates best practices in language arts literacy consistent with the Common Core State Standards. Highly qualified, on site reading coaches serve at each elementary school. Similarly, in mathematics, the District adopted the LoTi Mathematics Framework which also incorporates coaching and benchmarking in the schools. We also offer pre-algebra and algebra programs for grades 7 and 8.
Atlantic City Public Schools successfully applied for and received federal Race to the Top grant funds which will be used to implement a new middle school, grades 7 and 8, STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program. The curriculum will include robotics and other engineering opportunities for our students. The science laboratories will support these science, technology, and engineering initiatives.
We are also eager to introduce our Orchestra Academy and Choral Academy for seventh and eighth graders this year.
Atlantic City High School continues to provide programs to enable our students to become college and career ready. The high school offers a rigorous curriculum, with a large selection of Advanced Placement (AP) and honors courses. The Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs expose our students to various career paths. The home school connection has been strengthened using eChalk for the District website and teacher class pages. Parents of students at Atlantic City High School can review their child's assignments using the program. The students have the ability to email their assignments to their teachers and the parents can also communicate via email with their child's teacher.
Atlantic City Public Schools offer robust Special Education, Bilingual/ESL and Preschool programs to meet the needs of our students. The Newcomer Program at Atlantic City High School has been recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education as a Model Program.
Our Title I Parent Resource Centers in the elementary schools, high school and alternative school strengthen the ties between home and school. The Parent Resource Centers encourage parental involvement in school activities, provide strategies and instruction to help parents maximize their child's school experience and assist parents in improving their own skills and education through GED courses, job fairs, ESL services, citizenship classes and computer training. The Parent Centers host a variety of events for the students and parents throughout the year.
Our highest priority is to increase student achievement and monitor student progress at the classroom, school and district level. We look forward to the new school year and the opportunity to serve your children, our students.
Welcome to our Website! Be sure to visit often for important new, information, and districtwide activities.
