Fire Prevention Week at MLK

ATLANTIC CITY — The Atlantic City Public Schools Early Childhood Department recently hosted educational celebrations at several schools in honor of Fire Prevention Week.

The Atlantic City Fire Department visited both the New York Avenue School and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Complex on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. Preschool students gathered outside their respective buildings, where they were shown fire department tools and equipment. Then, they met members of the fire department along with special guest Marshall from PAW Patrol. The firefighters emphasized the importance of getting to safety immediately during an emergency and encouraged students to feel comfortable seeking help from firefighters.

“Our preschoolers had an amazing time learning all about fire safety,” said Peyton Caldwell and the Early Childhood team. “They explored a real fire truck, met our local Atlantic City firefighters, and even got to shake hands with the brave men and women who keep our community safe.” Each elementary school will host its own presentation.

Atlantic City Firefighter Sidney Coleman urged the students to see firefighters as friends, and introduced various members of the department. “One of the most important aspects of what we do is making sure that our children understand that we’re coming to help,” Coleman said. “When there’s a fire, get out. Leave all your pets and belongings behind. We’ll do everything we can to save them, but we want our children and citizens to stay safe.”

The Early Childhood team expressed gratitude to the Atlantic City Fire Department for sparking excitement for learning and a sense of safety among the district’s youngest learners. The celebrations not only taught essential fire safety skills but also strengthened the bonds between local heroes and the children they serve.

“A big thank-you to the Atlantic City Fire Department and special guest Marshall from PAW Patrol for taking time to teach our little learners in such a fun and memorable way,” Caldwell said. “The experience truly sparked curiosity and courage in our preschoolers.”
