ATLANTIC CITY – On Friday, January 30, 2026, students, teachers, and families gathered at Sovereign Avenue School for the highly anticipated  annual spelling bee.

The event, held in the school cafetorium, showcased the spelling talents of students from various grade levels as they competed for the coveted title of spelling bee champion.

“Spelling bees are about much more than competition—they reflect the essential building blocks of literacy,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. La’Quetta S. Small. “Strong spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension skills are foundational to academic success across all subject areas and help students become confident readers, writers, and communicators."

Sovereign Avenue School Principal Nicole Israel said spelling is beginning to become a lost art that needs to be preserved. “Spelling matters,” said Israel. “Our theme is Save the Bees – the Spelling Bees.” Israel said that with the popularity of computers with autocorrect, some students don’t focus on becoming good spellers anymore. However, learning to spell well, has tremendous benefits.

“It’s all connected to reading and comprehension,” Israel said. “We’re learning the importance of phonics and the importance of spelling so it’s all connected.”

Celebrating Student Achievement

After a series of challenging rounds, seventh grader Rameshwor Dev emerged as the winner, impressing the judges and audience alike with his mastery of words.

The runner-up, Sophia Lam, a talented sixth grader, also demonstrated remarkable skill and determination throughout the competition. Both students received enthusiastic applause and recognition from their peers, teachers, and families.

Guiding Lights: Organizers and Officials

The spelling bee was organized by lead teacher Karissa Ksizaek, whose dedication ensured a smooth and engaging event for all participants. Gregory Coughlin served as the pronouncer, providing each word with clarity and precision for the contestants. Some students asked for the word to be pronounced again. Others asked for words to be used in a sentence.

The panel of judges included Danielle Venzie, Cabrini Dunson, and Melissa Brown, who oversaw the proceedings and ensured fair play throughout the competition.

School Community Proud of Participants

The annual spelling bee is a valued tradition at Sovereign Avenue School, encouraging students to develop their vocabulary, public speaking, and confidence. This year’s event highlighted the hard work and preparation of all participants, with teachers and staff expressing pride in their students’ achievements.

“It takes me back to my childhood,” Israel said. “We’re learning the science of reading and the science of spelling.”

As the school celebrates Rameshwor Dev’s victory and Sophia Lam’s impressive runner up performance, anticipation is already building for next year’s competition and the continued success of Sovereign Avenue School’s spelling stars.

"Events like the Sovereign Avenue School Spelling Bee celebrate hard work, focus, and perseverance, while reinforcing the critical literacy skills our students will carry with them throughout their educational journey and beyond,” Dr. Small said.
