ATLANTIC CITY —Superintendent of Schools, Dr. La’Quetta S. Small, and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Lakecia Hyman, visited New York Avenue School on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, to celebrate Read Across America with students.

The two district leaders joined different classrooms of young readers for special read-aloud sessions, sharing stories that encouraged imagination, confidence and a lifelong love of books. Read Across America is a nationwide initiative designed to promote literacy and inspire children to explore the world through reading. Many, such as teacher Gary Melton who is pictured below with two students, were excited about the literacy celebration.

Dr. Small read the book I Am Enough, written by Grace Byers and illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo. The story’s message of self-confidence and self-acceptance resonated with students as they listened attentively during story time.

“You are more than enough,” Small told the students. “I want you to embrace who you are and love who you are.”

Dr. Hyman also spent time reading with students, reinforcing the district’s commitment to early literacy and the importance of imagination in learning.

“Using reading to explore the world is amazing,” Hyman said. “Books offer experiences and allow students to travel anywhere through their imagination.”

The visit was part of Read Across America celebrations taking place throughout Atlantic City Public Schools, where educators and administrators continue to emphasize literacy as a foundation for academic success and lifelong learning.

New York Avenue School Principal, Kendall Williams, said Read Across America gives students a chance to see how vital strong reading skills are to members of the community. "It creates a culture of reading for our students," said Williams. "I love the fact that so many guests come in and make contributions to our school. It showed a level of love and dedication for them to take time out of their busy schedules to come and support our initiative."
